Mail Order Hatching Eggs – What you should know before you buy!

People have been ordering hatching eggs for over a century. It’s a gamble each and every time. Will they arrive unscathed or scrambled? Will the postal service x-ray the box? Will they hatch? Will they be mixed breeds or the pure breds you paid for? Is there a guarantee of hatch rate? I hope to answer some of those questions.

First of all, you’ll need an incubator. I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked “Do I need a machine to make eggs hatch?” Your incubator can be a simple styrofoam type where you are responsible for turning the eggs or it can be fully automatic but you DO need one.

Back to mail order eggs…. A good hatchery/breeder will securely package each and every egg to protect it during transit. At Shoestring Homestead we inspect every single egg before hand wrapping them. They are placed in a bed of styrofoam packing POINTY END DOWN. We make sure the eggs don’t touch and then fill the box TIGHTLY with MORE packing so that nothing inside can move. We want to give you the best possible chance for a successful hatch. This is what a good hatchery/breeder does.

Do your homework! Look at reviews and feedback on the seller you are buying from. If the reviews are filled with “arrived broken” find another seller. Accidents happen in shipping and no one is perfect so you may see a few but if it happens often, and reviews point to sloppy shipping, find another seller. Ignore the feedback about poor hatch rates. YES, I said that! You’ll soon see why….

GROUND SHIPPING VERSUS AIR… A good hatchery will ship first class by ground. It’s only slightly slower but it is by far the better option. Why? Cargo areas are rarely controlled environments. Temperatures can (and do) reach very low numbers tens of thousands of feet in the air which can destroy fragile embryos. And the pressure changes can also be deadly to them as well. Shipping by ground can be slower but it is by far the best option if you want a successful hatch.

DO HOW LONG ARE THE EGGS GOOD FOR? Fertile hatching eggs are viable for 10 days. Sometimes older eggs will still hatch but after 10 days the chances decrease rapidly. Eggs you receive from Shoestring Homestead are never more than 5 days old when they ARRIVE at your door. We promise fresh fertile eggs and that is a promise we take pride in keeping.

Here at Shoestring Homestead we will only ship hatching eggs Monday through Wednesday unless weather conditions are perfect. We want the eggs to get to you before the weekend so they aren’t in postal limbo in unknown temperatures. Be leery of sellers who ship late in the week during the hottest or coldest seasons, or you can request your order be shipped on Monday of the following week. If you live in an area that experiences super low temperatures or is very high in altitude please let your seller know at the time you order!

WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT X-RAYS? The postal service x-rays packages for public safety. We ALWAYS label each box with “LIVE EMBRYOS – DO NOT X-RAY”. They usually honor that request. (Usually, Not always unfortunately). Make sure your seller labels the box or there’s a good chance the eggs will suffer the consequences.

The postal service handles millions of packages daily. They can’t gently carry your box of eggs. They most likely will be tumbled, dropped, and tossed. It happens. At Shoestring Homestead we label every single box “FRAGILE!”

Yes, we go through a lot of labels and stamp ink. We do it so you have the best possible hatch rate.

***Why don’t sellers guarantee the eggs will hatch? ***

It should be obvious if you’ve read this far. After the eggs leave the seller’s hands there are so many variables that effect the outcome that sellers have no control over. Once the eggs arrive the variables increase exponentially. Did the box sit in the blazing sun or freezing cold until the mail was collected? Is the buyer experienced in hatching? Do they let the eggs rest or set them immediately? Do they wash the eggs? Has the machine been running a full 24 hours beforehand? What is the temperature in the incubator? What is the humidity? Is the machine accurate? Has the machine been calibrated? Is it an automatic turner? Is the turner the proper size for the eggs? Do they roll around when it turns? Has the machine been opened? Do the eggs get locked down at the appropriate time? Is the humidity adjusted for lockdown? Is the machine still air or fan forced?

ALL of the above will affect the outcome. No seller will guarantee a hatch rate. Common sense should tell you that no buyer should ever expect that given all of the variables after the eggs leave the seller’s hands. Don’t blame the seller if the eggs don’t hatch. When leaving feedback base it on the condition of the eggs upon arrival, not the hatch rate.

At Shoestring Homestead we guarantee you will receive fresh fertile unwashed hatching eggs as quick as possible and in the same physical condition as they were in when laid. That’s the best guarantee you will find in the industry.

To sum this up…it’s a gamble to try to hatch shipped eggs. Each egg has a 50/50 chance of becoming a chick even if your seller is the best at what they do.

So why buy shipped eggs? There are many reasons to take your chances. You can start a flock/covey of birds you can’t find in your area. You can add a new bloodline to your current flock/covey. And you get to experience the thrill of opening that box and starting a new life!

You only live once! Take the chance!

  1. Just received 8 quail Eggs 9days ago and all were in good shape. I was wanting to get some

    1. I don’t know anyone right off hand. I’ve seen them in a lot of the FB groups I’m in. There’s one called egg swappers USA. I’m sure you’ll find someone on there. If you have eggs to swap it will probably be much cheaper on you.
